Michigan Central Train Station

Opened in 1913, Michigan Central Station, was Detroit's passenger rail depot until the last Amtrak pulled away on January 6, 1988. Now abandoned, the Beaux-Arts Classical style building was designed by Warren & Wetmore and Reed & Stern firms, who also designed New York City's Grand Central Terminal. The main waiting room, with its marble walls, was modeled after an ancient Roman bathhouse.

In this series, HDR's illustrative quality imparts a unique perspective to a subject and challenges one's own point of reference. The technique lends itself wholly to locating allure in Detroit's ruins, re-contextualizing familiar sights, and directing attention to the finer details of the cityscape.
